First off, I want to let you know this Friday, October 25th, HVCA will have its next Breakfast Panel called Hawaii’s Investments in Venture Capital. The panel consists of fund managers from the HiTIP II Fund, Hawaii Employees Retirement System’s venture capital focused fund, who will discuss what new technologies they are investing in and why.

First up, Dr. Rick Spinrad, President of the Marine Technology Society, will be in Honolulu this Thursday and Friday 10/17 &10/18. MTS is an international, not-for-profit, community of ocean engineers, technologists, policymakers and educators. The former Chief Scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, will be speaking at a dinner meeting at Rainbow Marina on Thursday at 5:30 pm. On Friday, he’ll be discussing the state of marine technology and the blue economy at a noon seminar sponsored by the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology and MTS in room 723 POST building at UH Manoa. First up I want to let you know about this quick news item, coming up tomorrow, Oct 10th, is an IfA talk about the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration which recently obtained the first image of a black hole. Dr. Geoffrey Bower will describe the science and technology behind this discovery, including what it tells us about Einstein’s theory of general relativity. The black hole has been given the Hawaiian name PÅwehi in recognition of the pioneering role of Maunakea telescopes – the Submillimeter Array and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope.
